Our Team
Sarah Schrader
Sarah spent most of her childhood in Rangeley, Maine sorrounded by the mossy rocks, groves of birch, raccoons, song birds and abounding slug populations. Before moving back to Maine as an adult, Sarah studied psychology and art and played basketball at Hamilton College in upstate New York.
After college, she spent time as an Americorps volunteer, life-sharing in an intentional community with young adults with developmental disabilities, farming in Florida, completing a masters degree in Elementary and Special Education at Antioch University and starting her teaching careerin California.
She currently teaches Kindergarten at Hope Elementary School, in Hope, Maine, where she weaves in the arts and nature-based pedagogy that she’s gathered along the way. Sarah has led canoeing, hiking, SUPing and AT ski/splitboarding and nature-based play programs with Sundog and MountainSea, which have been a rewarding and joyful blend of her personal and professional passions. In her free time, Sarah can be found running, cooking, mountain biking, uphill skiing, sailing, surfing, playing her fiddle or ukulele & making art.
Josh Lipkowitz
Josh spent his formative years in the hills of Western Massachusetts and the slightly bigger hills of Vermont. He isn’t quite sure if his first unassisted movements were on skis or on foot. He fell in love with Maine during graduate school and after multiple west coast forays, he moved back to midcoast in 2017.
He has lived in four countries outside of the US and speaks Portuguese & Spanish. He has taught outdoor education to kids of all ages while also teaching environmental science, outdoor adventure education, and politics at the college level. Josh completed a BA at Pitzer College and a MS at Antioch University. He is currently completing an MS in Snow and Avalanche Science at Montana State University.
Josh has led people young & old into the outdoors on foot, skis, snowboards, surfboards, sailboats, canoes, bicycles, and sea kayaks. He also teaches avalanche education and steep skiing to aspiring snowy mountain goers. His passion is to facilitate powerful experiences in wild spaces where people can infuse their adventure with a deep reverence for the ecology and natural history of the places where we get to play. He believes time spent in nature develops our character and gives us the skills we need to make a positive impact on our communities.
When not outside, Josh loves to read, play music, make things out of wood & flour, and dream about snow & waves. He has his Pro 2 Avalanche Certification, is a Wilderness First Responder, a licensed captain, and a licensed massage therapist.
Jen Porter
Jen Porter grew up exploring midcoast Maine's ocean & lakes & mountains. She worked for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School for 15 years as an instructor & course director, and now serves on the Board of Directors for HIOBS. She spent 10 years working as a farmer & agricultural consultant, and built & managed several farms in the area including the Turner Farm on North Haven Island & the Point Lookout Farm in Lincolnville. Jen teaches Spanish and has worked on farm projects in Spain, Cuba, Mexico & Chile. After farming for a decade on North Haven Island in Penobscot Bay with her husband and two children on their family farm, she later created and managed the Turner Farm, an organic, diversified, vegetable, meat & dairy farm that supports Nebo Lodge's farm-to-table restaurant.
More recently, Jen spearheaded the Penobscot Bay Leadership Collaboration (PBLC), an educational partnership between 3 local midcoast Maine organizations: The Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, The Apprenticeshop & The Hurricane Island Center for Science & Leadership. Jen has been involved in developing several outdoor education programs including Sundog Outdoor Expeditions & MountainSea Expeditions. When not working for MountainSea, Jen works as a facilitator and program manager for Outward Bound Professional, leading development programs for organizations & professional teams. She earned her master’s degree at Tuft's Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy & her undergraduate degree at Colby College.
Jen & her husband love being outdoors & on expedition, and every once in a while, their two teenagers might join them in the fun.
We created MountainSea Expeditions to weave together science, nature, and adventure with people of all ages and abilities.
